Why families come
Real opponents
Playing in person against new people — other kids, parents, and adults — is one of the best ways for a young player to enjoy the game and improve.
No rating required
Previous tournament experience and US Chess ratings are not needed for meetups. Kids who just learned how the pieces move are welcome.
Low pressure
There are no rounds, brackets, or clocks required. Kids can play a game, take a break, and play again at their own pace.
Play as a family
Parents are welcome to play too. Many families enjoy chess together at the same table.
What parents should know
Roswell Chess meetups are community events, not a chess school or childcare program. Parents or guardians stay with their children during the meetup.
Meetups are free, and we ask you to register on Chess67 so we know how many boards and seats to set out. Color-coded name tags help kids find opponents near their level.
Common Questions
- Is my child too young or too new?
- If your child knows how the pieces move, they can play. All skill levels are welcome.
- Are there kids' tournaments?
- Roswell Chess runs occasional tournaments, some of which may suit young players. Details and entry fees are listed on each event's Chess67 page.
